Food and Beverage: Dine Like a Norwegian

Galley Staff Aboard Norwegian GetawayThe newest cruise ship at sea, the Norwegian Getaway, features no less than 27 dining venues and 22 bars and lounges.

Continuing its so-called Freestyle concept that Norwegian launched years ago, all the venues feature open seating, including 10 complimentary and 17 specialty dining options, with a cover or a-la-carte charge.

With all the different cuisines, the cruise line boasts that guests can “dine like an Italian, Brazilian, or Zakarian.”

And being designated Miami’s ship, the Getaway features several restaurants and bars set to evoke the tropical feel of Miami and South Florida.

The main complimentary dining options are the Savor and Taste restaurants, as well as The Tropicana Room, which allows guests to dine and dance. Other options include the Garden Café, the indoor buffet on the top, aft deck; O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill, open 24 hours; and the Flamingo Bar and Grill, another Latin-inspired venue. In addition is room service, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night snacks.

The specialty restaurants range from Le Bistro French Restaurant and Cagney’s Steakhouse to the Brazilian Moderno Churrascaria, La Cucina Italian Restaurant, Japanese Teppenyaki, and Shanghai’s Noodle Bar and Wasabi, serving contemporary sushi and sashimi. In addition is Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, which also has a raw bar and a takeout section. As the name implies, seafood is the star attraction.

There is also the Chef’s Table, serving up a nine-course meal paired with wines and prepared by “our master chef,” according to Norwegian. And there are plenty of other temptations, starting with Carlo’s Bake Shop, managed by Master Baker Buddy Valastro. To top it all off is the Illusionarium, which serves up dinner and entertainment.

The 22 bars and lounges include Bar 21 in the casino; the Bliss Ultra Lounge, open until the wee hours; the Mixx Bar, between the Savor and Taste restaurants; Spice H2O, an adults-only venue; the Theater Bar, a walk-up, full-service bar at the back of the theater; and the Ice Bar where guests can chill out in 17 degrees, and the bar, walls, seats and glasses are made of ice. Playing on the Miami angle is the Sugarcane and Mojito Bar. There are also bars in other entertainment venues such as the GRAMMY Experience and the Headliners Comedy Club, and in the Cigar Lounge, as well as by the pool.

No one will ever be thirsty on the Getaway or stay hungry for very long.
