Risk Analysis
As for costs, Kohlmann said they de-

pend on the scope of the refits, which may
include significant investments, for ex-
ample, in shorepower system installations
or advanced exhaust gas cleaning systems.

   “The key to successfully managing
drydocks is a risk analysis to determine
the time factor,” he said, “knowing what
tasks require the most time and also ex-
actly how much time. On top of that, the
long-term planning and preparation for
each drydock is crucial.

“At Carnival Maritime, we have devel-
oped a team of drydock experts that are
singularly focused on these projects. That
is a huge advantage.”

   And with evolving technologies Kohl-
mann and his team have to take on new
challenges.

   “With the LNG-fueled AIDAnova and
Costa Smeralda being introduced, we also
have to build expertise and experience in
LNG drydocking procedures,” he said.
“That is introducing a new era for the
cruise industry.” ¾
