European Deployment Trends

While European cruise brands both deploy their ships and mainly source passengers in Europe, Costa Crociere is deploying more its passenger capacity in Asia in 2017, and MSC Cruises has also reduced the percentage of its capacity in Europe, while building up in the Caribbean, according to the 2017-2018 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.

In 2017, Costa is dedicating 44 percent of its fleet capacity to Asia (mostly China), 41.3 percent to Europe, 5.1 percent to the Caribbean, and the balance elsewhere. Five years ago, Costa only had 6.2 percent of its capacity in Asia, but more than 64 percent in Europe.

MSC had nearly 70 percent of its fleet capacity in Europe five years ago, compared to less than 50 percent today. At the same time, the brand has built up its Caribbean deployment from less than 4 percent of its capacity in 2012 to more than 20 percent in 2017.

Both brands are maintaining their presence in South America, although with a smaller percentage of their capacity than five years ago.

AIDA and P&O UK have both increased their European deployments; Thomson and Pullmantur have both retreated in Europe; while TUI is maintaining its European presence.

The 2017-2018 Cruise Industry News Annual Report tracks the deployment of the European brands over the past five years.
