EXPEDITION Market

Anatomy of an Expedition Cruise Ship

GOING GREEN: A key focus for the industry is on reducing
emissions, with extensive use of low-sulfur marine gas
oil (MGO) and other alternative power sources, such as
liquefied natural gas (LNG) and even battery packs. These
ships are also outfitted with advanced wastewater treat-
ment systems, selective catalytic reduction systems, and
                                                              other environmental safeguards.

LESS PEOPLE, UPSCALE PRODUCT: The biggest expedition ships carry
around 500 guests, while the vast majority are in the 200-guest range,
which is an optimal number for the key landing sites in Antarctica and get-
ting people off and on the ship quickly. The new generation of expedition
ships cater to a smaller number of passengers, providing a more upscale
experience. These vessels often feature multiple restaurants, bars and
even pool decks, along with full-service spas and entertainment venues. A
particular emphasis is placed on the creation of ample viewing areas, with
an abundance of floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive glass walls.
