Jones Act Temporarily Waived

According to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, in a Friday news conference on Hurricane Sandy, the Jones Act has been temporarily waived in hopes of easing fuel and other supply deliveries to the Northeast.

Meanwhile, New York Harbor has re-opened with the Norwegian Gem and Caribbean Princess were docking in Manhattan on Friday.

The Jones Act, of course, requires non-American-flagged ships to stop a foreign port of call while visiting American ports.

While cruise was not brought up, the Jones Act has long been discussed in the industry.

Senator John McCain proposed repealing the act as recently as 2010.
