Built in Finland, the Mein Schiff 5 was delivered to TUI Cruises on June 20, 2016.

She is the third newbuild for the TUI brand, and sister ship to the Mein Schiff 3 (2014), the Mein Schiff 4 (2015) and Mein Schiff 6 (2017).

The ship was officially named in the Bay of Lübeck, in Travemünde, Germany, on July 15, 2016. The godmother was the German singer-songwriter Lena Meyer-Landrut.
