The Independence of the Seas is the last ship of the Freedom-class. It debuted in April 2008 and spent its inaugural season sailing in Europe for Royal Caribbean International.

The biggest cruise ship in the world when it was launched, it was built in Finland. The naming ceremony took place in Southampton, which Elizabeth Hill serving as godmother.
