Named after the Maas River, in the Netherlands, the Maasdam entered service for Holland America Line on January 1, 1993.

As part of the S-class, she has three sister ships: Veendam, Pacific Aria (former Ryndam) and Pacific Eden (former Statendam).

One of the most advanced cruise ships when launched, she has capacity for 1,258 passengers and is 55,575 tons.
