Built in Italy by the Fincantieri shipyard, the Amsterdam is one of the flagships of the Holland America Line fleet. She shares the title with her sister ship Rotterdam.

Named after the Dutch city of Amsterdam, the ship had its maiden voyage on October 30, 2000.

She is the newest ship of the R-class, and has other two sister ships, the Zaandam and the Volendam.
