Part of the Celebrity Cruises fleet, the Celebrity Equinox entered service on July 31, 2009. She was built at the Meyer Werft shipyard, in Germany, as the second Solstice-class ship.

The other ships in this class are: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection.

The ship was officially named on July 31, 2009 by the godmother Nina Barough. A cancer survivor, Nina was the leader of U.K.-based breast cancer foundation "Walk the Walk".
