San Diego Celebrates Annual Family Fishing Event

The annual celebration of San Diego’s world-famous sport-fishing industry is set to make a splash this coming weekend.

The 34th annual Port of Dan Diego Day at the Docks is a free family event, will be held Sunday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at San Diego’s Sportfishing Landings, located at 1403 Scott Street.

The event will feature: Fishing seminars; open House tours of the sport-fishing fleet; free kids’ fishing lessons; manufacturer booths ; historical displays; how-to fishing seminars; and casting contests

There will also be boat rides on San Diego Bay, displays by marine artists and fishing tackle experts, great food and musical entertainment.

Free shuttle service will be available to and from the sport-fishing landings. Visitors are asked to park on Shelter Island and catch one of the free shuttles.

The Port of San Diego’s sportfishing fleet has been located at Shelter Island’s America’s Cup Harbor since 1949. The fleet includes three landings: H&M landing, Point Loma Sportsfihsing and Fisherman’s Landing.

In addition to providing a unique form of recreation for fishing enthusiasts of every level, the fleet is also an important economic engine for the San Diego region.

According to 2011 data from the Department of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Marine Fisheries Services, sales for charter boats in the region amount to $172 million, with direct trip costs estimated at $107 million.
