Cold ironing is set to make its debut in Canada/New England, as Halifax has confirmed a deal with the Canadian government to implement shore power for cruise ships docking at the Canadian port.

The Canadian government will contribute $5 million to the project, while the Nova Scotia province and the port are each putting in $2.5 million as the Emissions Control Area for North America takes full effect in 2015.

While Transport Canada has touted numbers about the better air in the port and the amount of fuel saving, few – if any – ships sailing in Canada/New England currently have cold ironing equipment.

A source familiar with the situation confirmed that more Canadian ports could announce a similar deal shortly.
