Port of Galveston Welcomes 5 Millionth Cruise Passenger

On September 20th, the Port of Galveston celebrated a major milestone as the 5 millionth cruise passenger sailed on a cruise from Texas’ Star Cruise Port.

“The cruise business is good not only for Galveston, but for the entire state of Texas. Our goal is not only for passengers to have a pleasant experience sailing from our port but also to have cruise passengers spend some time on the island to discover the many other attractions that Galveston has to offer.”, said Mike Mierzwa, Port Director.

The Port of Galveston ranks 5th in the United States for passenger embarkations while Texas ranks 4th in the nation for cruise industry expenditures according to newly released 2011 data compiled by CLIA, the world’s largest cruise association.

In 2011, the Port of Galveston’s 920,615 revenue passengers generated more than $23 million in annual business revenue, $917 million in income for Texas workers while creating 17,316 jobs.
