Shipbuilding: Hapag-Lloyd Takes Next Step with Europa 2

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' Europa 2 being floated out at STX.The Europa 2 will be the first newbuild in the world to have a catalytic converter, reducing nitric oxide emissions by 95 percent when she launches ultra-luxury service for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises in 2013, said Dr. Henning Brauer, head of project management for the German cruise line.

“It will reduce nitric oxides in the exhaust by Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR),” explained Brauer, “transforming the oxides into nitrogen and water with the help of a synthetic non-hazardous aqueous urea solution.”

Other green highlights include an advanced wastewater treatment plant, desalination plant, tributyltin-free underwater paint, LED lighting, and comprehensive waste separation and disposal facilities aboard.

The 516-passenger vessel will rely on four MaK 6M43C engines from Caterpillar.

“Rubber buffers ensure as little noise and vibration as possible. This is definitely a big benefit for passengers and crew,” explained Brauer.

“For us it is important to have the top suppliers for each segment (of the ship), that offer the best quality, the best value-for-money and the latest technology,” Brauer continued.

The Europa 2 will get Mermaid pods from Rolls-Royce, each fitted with 7.25MW synchronous motors fed by PWM MV7000 converters.

The suites onboard will have a free mini-bar, internet access (for a fee), as well as a tablet PC.

“The 251 suites in seven different categories measure in size from 301 to 1,066 square feet,” Brauer said.

Sixteen spa suites will have whirlpool bathtubs, rain shower and steam saunas.

On the food and beverage side, the newbuild will have eight restaurants and six bars, “synonymous with diversity and flexibility.”

“There will be eight restaurants to choose from, among them, three specialty restaurants with Mediterranean, French and Asian cuisine, as well as a Sushi Bar. All restaurants are included in the cruise price, excluding beverages,” said Brauer. “On special occasions, guests can book the private dining room, allowing them to dine in a very personal atmosphere. There will also be an onboard cooking school, equipped by Miele.”
