Tasport Seeks to Become Cruise Hub

RenderingTasports is set to source a contractor to bring the $7 million redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf No 2 Wharf Shed to life as a hub for Antarctic and cruise operations, according to a press release.

Tasports’ Chief Executive Paul Weedon said the company is inviting “preferred” contractors to participate in the tender process which commences today and will close on May 14, 2012.

“We have been very pleased at how the project is progressing and we remain on schedule for a construction to start mid-June.”

“Tasports has worked with government, industry and operational stakeholders throughout the development of the business case for Macquarie Wharf No 2 Shed and strongly believes that this development will support growth in cruise and Antarctic activities in Hobart, providing flow on economic benefits for port users, tourism and the greater Tasmanian community,” Weedon stated.

Meanwhile, Tasmania is prepared to welcome its biggest cruise ship in 2012 – the Voyager of the Seas and recently announced cruise visits to Hobart would increase 20 percent this season with 39 scheduled calls to Hobart alone.
