STX Turku Shipyard Launches Multipurpose Deck Cargo Vessel

On March 1, 2012, STX Finland Oy Turku shipyard carried out the launch of the multipurpose deck cargo vessel built for Gaiamare Ltd. The vessel will be approx. 105.4 metres long and approx. 18.8 metres wide. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered in late spring 2012.

The launching was carried out near the shipyard’s construction basin following traditions of the yard with representatives from Gaiamare Ltd, the classification society Bureau Veritas and STX Finland; invited guests and press also participated.

The modern and environmentally friendly multipurpose deck cargo vessel is designed to operate globally and can be utilised for various tasks including transport of demanding project cargo such as offshore wind farm structure and for energy wood transport in the Baltic Sea area. The ice class 1A vessel will be able to operate efficiently in demanding ice conditions. The vessel is also capable of operating in oil spill response activities. The main engines of the vessel can use environmentally friendly bio oil as fuel.

“The building schedule for the vessel is tight. Test runs have already been started and the sea trial of the vessel is due in April. Intensive work onboard the launched ship continues”, explains Turku Shipyard Director Jari Anttila.

“Our multipurpose vessel concept has been well received by our clients. We eagerly anticipate this new version”, states the Chairman of the Board of Meriaura Oy Jussi Mälkiä.
