RINA to Train Carnival Newbuild Inspectors

Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding, the newbuilding arm of the world’s largest cruise ship group, has contracted with leading classification society RINA to train its newbuilding superintendents.

The three year contract will provide Carnival’s inspection teams with training in health, quality and safety, CCS organisation, and technical subjects such as fire protection, materials, machinery and plants, coating definition, maintenance and repair, marine metallurgy, welding, piping systems and HVAC, electrical and automation systems and USPHS (United States Public Health Service) requirements.

Antonio Pingiori, head of the marine division of RINA, says, “Our ability to share our wide ranging expertise with shipowners is a key benefit for them. Our senior trainers have many years of experience with shipyards and newbuildings, and have the advantage of the backing of an organisation with deep technical knowledge, and the resources to package and deliver that experience and knowledge through our RINA Training Academy. Carnival is a key client of ours, we have worked with them on developing and classing some of the world’s most innovative cruise ships, and this collaboration with them to ensure their superintendents can bring the best in oversight to the shipyards is an important step for both of us. We are very proud to help Carnival in this way.”

Martin Vos, Quality Manager of Carnival Corporate Shipbuilding, says, “Carnival group has an extensive newbuilding programme, currently 17 ships in 5 yards. These are highly complex and closely regulated ships, many of which are breaking new ground technologically. It is vital for us to work with good partners, and vital that our inspection staff are well trained and can ensure the quality and integrity of the newbuilding process. RINA has experience in passenger ship newbuilding and we have a long relationship with them so it is a sensible step to tap their experience to train our people.”

The basic training module outlined above will be followed buy deeper specialist courses that will cover specific fields in more detail. The training material and contents were developed by RINA in cooperation with Carnival, and will be continuously updated using feedback from superintendents in service. All the tutors are senior RINA technical experts and the courses will be held in the RINA Academy training centre, in Genoa.
