As a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Passenger Ship Terminal (PST) is officially closed (as of press time) to scheduled cruise ships until March 16, 2002, with ships diverted to Baltimore, Philadelphia and other East Coast ports. The PST is being utilized as a service center for the families of victims, and as local headquarters for the Federal Emergency Management Authority and the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management.

However, Gary Lesnevich, director of operations for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was hopeful that one of the two cruise piers might reopen sooner, perhaps in time for the previously scheduled departure on January 7 of the QE2 on her world cruise.

An exception to the no-cruise-ship rule took place on November 10, when the PST was the site of the naming ceremony of Royal Caribbean International’s Adventure of the Seas.

The most notable ship to visit the PST in 2011, however, was probably that of the U.S. Navy hospital ship Comfort, which arrived at Pier 92 on Sept. 14, less than 72 hours after the World Trade Center attacks. The ship provided medical, berthing and support services to 2,300 rescue-workers during its three-week stay.

Due to the attacks, New York lost about 160,000 passengers as ships were redirected to other ports.
