Marine Industry Cares Annual Spin-a-Thon

On May 20 the marine industry showed up in large numbers to ride against child abuse. It was a beautiful day on the Riverwalk at Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale, where over 400 participants geared up to spin on 60 stationary bikes to raise money and awareness for Kids in Distress (KID). From 1pm to 7pm, the wheels did not stop turning, with special guests like City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler and former Miami Dolphins player Keith Sims among the first to ride.

The event was hosted by the Marine Industry Cares Foundation, founded in 2010 by marine industry leaders in South Florida motivated to make a difference in their city. The foundation seeks to build a lasting relationship between the marine industry and the local community by mobilizing the generous spirit of the maritime community to benefit charities helping children and families in need. This year’s event was the biggest yet and raised over $100,000, with donations still pouring in.

“We would like to thank all of our sponsors, riders, organizers and volunteers for making the 3rd annual Spin-A-Thon a huge success,” said Marine Industry Cares Foundation Chairman and President Mole Telfer.

The Spin-A-Thon was a Fort Lauderdale centennial event and was sanctioned by Winterfest. Emcee Ross from Rock With U Entertainment kept the participants pumped and the crowd of 700 spectators excited and enthusiastic.

After the six hours of constant cycling, the event concluded with a “Thank-You” party, with delicious food and cocktails provided by local restaurants. To see photos and videos from the 3rd annual Spin-A-Thon, ‘Like’ Marine Industry Cares Foundation on Facebook!
