The eighth ship of the AIDA fleet has been christened. 45,000 AIDA fans turned the area around the Ostseekai dock into a huge party mile to make the christening of AIDAsol a great event.

Godmother Bettina Zwickler – chosen by the AIDA fans from 1,523 applicants – spoke the official christening address at precisely 9.34 p.m. with AIDA President Michael Thamm standing beside her:

“You beautiful ship! Wherever your voyages lead you – your sunny smile will make the people happy. I christen you with the name AIDAsol and wish you, your guests and your crew a good, safe journey at all times and may you always have sufficient water beneath your keel.”

A huge firework display with 3,000 kilograms of pyrotechnics and 10,000 effects then lit up the night sky above AIDAsol and the inlet. Before that, Kim Wilde, OMD, John Miles and other international stars had got the audience into a festive mood with the free concert “Stars for AIDAsol: the AIDA Night of the Proms”. The christening party and concluding firework display were shown live on YouTube, and all the ships of the AIDA fleet.

Among the many guests attending the christening was the Mayor of Kiel, Thorsten Albig, who has issued the invitations to the party together with the seaport and AIDA: “It was a great night as well for the ship and the city of Kiel.  I am really impressed with the enthusiasm with which the residents of Kiel celebrated the christening.”

Immediately after the christening, AIDAsol set off on her maiden voyage through Northern Europe. The cruise will take the ship’s guests to Copenhagen, Oslo, London, Paris and Amsterdam before finally arriving at Hamburg.
