German Market: 1.2 Million Pax in 2010

The German-cruise market generated a record 1.2 million passengers in 2010, according to Hamburg port officials speaking in Miami.

Hamburg’s season was at an all-time high for 2010, running from February to December. Ninety-seven percent of Hamburg’s calls were turnaround calls.

In 2011, Hamburg expects 119 calls and roughly 200,000 passengers, representing a 22.1 percent jump. Last year the port saw a jump of some 120,000 passengers from 2009.

Celebrity Cruises has announced it will christen its newest ship – Celebrity Silhouette – in Hamburg this July. Mein Schiff 2 will also be named by TUI in Hamburg in May.

Cunard Line has doubled its calls to Hamburg, now making eight calls, two with QM2 and six with Queen Elizabeth. Meanwhile, AIDA will have four ships in Hamburg and the port will have calls during Christmas cruises from operators Fred. Olsen, Saga and Phoenix Reisen.

Hamburg has set a goal to double passenger movements by 2015. That being a mark of 500,000 passengers just four years from now, which port officials said they “are sure can be reached.”
