Cruise Baltic Gearing Up for 2010 Conference

Cruise Baltic is getting ready for its 2010 conference in Copenhagen, October 27 – 29.

The association consists of 10 countries, 27 destinations and 45 partners with an aim “to integrate the region’s international cruise tourism industry by exchange of knowledge and information,” according to a statement from the organization.

Speakers at the conference will include Terry Dale, CEO and president of CLIA; Neil Palomba, COO of MSC Cruises; Ian Buckeridge from SeaDream and Burkhard Miller from AIDA.

Topics on the agenda will undoubtedly include a green focus, as the Baltic has become one of the strictest regions in the world regarding air and sea emissions from ships.

Despite strict laws, the Baltic and the region has been on a growth track. Celebrity Cruises positioned its new Eclipse in Southampton to run a series of Baltic cruises, and the 2010 Cruise Industry News Annual Report’s exclusive statistics show a 23 percent capacity increase over 2009 in the region.

Most notable is MSC Cruises, which has gone from three ships and a capacity of 83,040 passengers in 2009 to four ships and a capacity of 157,740 passengers in 2010, representing a 12 percent market share.

AIDA has also followed suit, going from three ships and 74,564 passengers in 2009 to six ships and 104,222 passengers in 2010. P&O is the third cruise operator to add news-grabbing capacity for the region, reporting in, according to Cruise Industry News, at 100,580 passengers this year, compared to just 66,580 in 2009.

Cruise Industry News will be reporting live from the conference. Stay up to date on the latest happenings on Cruise Baltic next week on CruiseIndustryNews.com, and be sure to subscribe to the Cruise Industry News Quarterly Magazine for a special in-depth feature section on the conference.
