Shore Excursion Accident in Tortola

According to Princess Cruises, a tour bus carrying a group of passengers from the Caribbean Princess left the road and rolled over in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, killing one passenger and seriously injuring two others. The accident happened approximately at 9:35 this morning (2/23/10).

The passenger who passed away was a 24-year-old man from Rochester, New York.  He was traveling with his parents, who were with him on the tour bus, according to statement from Princess.

The injured passengers were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.  The other passengers on the bus returned to Caribbean Princess and were checked by the ship’s medical staff.

Princess said it was still in the process of determining the details of the accident, but it appears that the bus left the road and turned over as it was taking passengers on a “Tropical Forest Hike and Beach” excursion.

The Caribbean Princess is on a seven-day Southern Caribbean cruise from San Juan calling at St. Thomas, Tortola, Antigua, St. Lucia and Barbados.

A spokesperson for Princess said in statement that the company was deeply saddened to report the accident and that “our thoughts and prayers are with this family, and we are providing support to them during this difficult time.”
