Nanaimo, B.C. Cruise Facility Construction

Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni, along with Ron Cantelon, MLA for Parksville-Qualicum, today announced that residents of Nanaimo will benefit from a new cruise ship terminal facility. The $22 million project will be funded by the federal and provincial governments, which will each contribute $8.5 million under Canada’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, with the remaining $5 million to be provided by the Nanaimo Port Authority.

“The construction of the Nanaimo cruise ship terminal will have a positive, lasting impact on the city of Nanaimo’s economy, while putting people to work during these tough economic times,” said MP Lunney. “This project is another example of what our Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is doing to stimulate the economy and create jobs – for both the short term and the long term.”

“There is enormous potential in the Nanaimo port and this funding will help ensure a vibrant tourism industry continues to exist on the Central Island,” said MLA Cantelon. “Especially important in these challenging economic times, this project will generate job growth for local residents and increase the number of visitors we have to our region.”

The new facility will allow cruise vessels to berth directly in the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf area, eliminating the need to shuttle passengers to and from the harbour area by boat. This project will help promote tourism and contribute to economic activity within the city.

Canada and British Columbia are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure. Both governments have agreed to work together to ensure that these funds are delivered quickly and efficiently to municipalities in British Columbia.
