Port of Galveston Receives $40 Million in Federal Dredge Funding

The Port of Galveston is pleased to report that our Nation considers the harbor to be a vital link to the economy by investing $40 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This funding, which is managed though the Corps of Engineers, will complete the Houston-Galveston Navigation Channels Project that was authorized in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 1996 while improving the Galveston Channel to a depth of 45 feet.

“It is a great achievement for the Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, the Port of Galveston and our Texas Congressional delegation who have worked diligently to get the funding in place so that the port can be utilized to its highest and best use for the state of Texas and the nation”, said Gerald Sullivan, Chairman of the Board of the Galveston Wharves.

The funding actually represents a two step program. The Corps will use $14 million from the Operation and Maintenance program to return the channel to its current authorized depth of 40 feet in preparation for the harbor improvement to deepen the channel to 45 feet.

“A coordinated effort has been underway for many months by the offices of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Senator John Cornyn and Representative Ron Paul to make this funding a reality. It would not have happened without their vigilant effort and continued support.”, said Port Director, Steve Cernak

$25.1 million of construction funds will be used by the Corps to complete the deepening project. The project is a key component for the current and future development of the port for economic growth and increased trade for the region and the nation.

Colonel David C. Weston, Galveston District Army Corps of Engineers stated, “These projects reflect the great partnership we have with the Port of Galveston. We’re looking forward to accomplishing the projects, which will bring lasting benefits to the Galveston area and give the Corps the opportunity to contribute to the economic well being of the area.”
