Scylla to Expand Into Expedition Market with VIVA Cruises

Scylla will expand its cruise brand, VIVA Cruises Expeditions, in summer 2021 with the SeaVenture sailing to Northern Europe and the Arctic.

The Switzerland-based vessel management company owns and operates more than 30 riverboats for various brands, and has its own river brand in VIVA Cruises.

Earlier this year, the company purchased the Bremen from Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. It will take delivery of the 155-guest ship in 2021.

Scylla will then operate it under the VIVA brand for the summer season, before a winter charter sees the ship sail for Polar Latitudes in Antarctica.

Scylla collected its 32nd European ship with the recent addition of the Anna Katharina. The 182-guest vessel is operating on a charter deal for Phoenix Reisen, according to the 2020 European River Cruise Market Report by Cruise Industry News. It also recently introduced the MS Andorinha which sails for Tauck.

The family-owned Scylla operation has been carefully expanding since the 1970s, and is now led by brothers Arno and Robert Reitsma.

The sizable fleet ranges from the 220-guest Alina and Amelia down to the 88-guest Swiss Ruby.

Next year, the larger Geoffrey Chaucher is set for a February debut in the river market with capacity for 176 guests.

Most of the company’s capacity is on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.
