Imtech to Fit Out First TUI Cruise Line

Imtech Deutschland is to play a part in refitting the first cruise liner of TUI Cruises. In mid-March 2009, the luxury liner “Galaxy” will enter the dock at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven for an extensive conversion and refit in preparation for the liner’s new assignment. The four-star-plus vessel will undergo a complete refit of its 974 cabins, as well as the spa and fitness areas, and the conversion will include new restaurants and the construction of new cabins with balconies.

Imtech is in charge of planning and construction for the entire air-conditioning and ventilation systems technology in the areas involved in the conversion and will therefore make a major contribution to the comfort provided for guests and crew on board the cruise liner. The conversion phase, to be concluded in time for the naming ceremony on 15 May, will take 38 days to accomplish for all those involved in the project. Starting in March 2009, some 30 Imtech engineers and installation technicians will be on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

On cruise liners, the wellbeing of guests depends to a large extent on adequate air-conditioning inside the cabins and common indoor spaces. Imtech has been providing its customers with energy-efficient ventilation and air-conditioning solutions for cruise liners since 1988, with more than 30 cruise vessels fitted out during that time. This includes the first TUI cruise liner, the “Galaxy”, delivered by the Meyer shipyard in 1996.

The conversion and technical upgrade of HVAC systems on cruise liners has been part of the areas of competence of Imtech Schiffbau-/Dockbautechnik since the late 1990s. Besides the sister ship of the “Galaxy”, the “Century”, other luxury liners such as the “Norwegian Jade”, the “Pride of Aloha” and the “Norwegian Spirit” have also undergone technical refits.
