Gothenburg Wants to Be Year-Round Cruise Destination

The focus is on 2018 in the port of Gothenburg, when a brand new cruise terminal will open adjacent to the city center. So far, 39 calls are on the books for 2018 and half of them will use the new America Cruise Terminal, said Petra Gamerdinger, cruise manager.

Before then a high point will be the maiden call from the Norwegian Getaway.

“With 4,000 guests, she will, in passenger terms, be the largest cruise ship ever to visit,” Gamerdinger told Cruise Industry News. “Other ships that will attract attention include the new Mein Schiff 6.”

The port also gets a handful of winter calls, and offers a 30 percent rebate to ships calling during the low season. There is also a volume call discount system in place.

“The aim of the city of Gothenburg is to be an attractive destination all year around, and we see a potential to attract more cruise calls both during summer, autumn, winter and spring,” noted Gamerdinger. The port can handle ships of any size and has two dedicated cruise berths.
