Clearshield Keeps Glass Gleaming on New Superliner

Ritec’s ClearShield glass protection system is part of the luxury specification of P&O Cruises’ new Ventura – the largest super liner ever built for the British market. Around 15,500m2 of glass on board the Ventura has been protected with ClearShield, including cabin windows, balcony doors, on the bridge and glass walls near one of the ship’s five swimming pools. A proven solution to the problem of marine glass corrosion, P&O Cruises’ investment in ClearShield reflects the company’s commitment to passenger satisfaction and increased visibility and safety for the crew.

ClearShield treated glass on the Ventura will resist staining and corrosion from the harsh sea environment, from contaminants such as engine exhaust, as well as general dirt and finger marks. The glass will also require less frequent cleaning and be easier to maintain an ‘as-new’ appearance without the need for harsh chemicals, bringing both environmental benefits and cost savings.

The ClearShield glass protection process was completed by Ritec International Marine Services, a division of Bohle ClearShield, in partnership with Somec, a specialist manufacturer of marine glass. All of the glass was treated during the ship’s final stage of construction at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, northern Italy.

Before applying the ClearShield System, Ritec’s experienced team conducted a thorough inspection of all the glass to be treated for any scratches or traces of adhesive. This is to check that the surface of the glass is in pristine condition before treatment and so ensure effective, long lasting protection. ClearShield is easy to apply using manual or automatic spraying equipment and its advanced polymeric resin formula bonds to the glass surface, providing a durable and totally transparent barrier, which is chemically inert, non-hazardous, UV stable and will not peel, crack or flake.

Due to enter service soon, the Ventura sets a new standard in 21st century cruising. At some 290 metres long and with a crew of 1,200, she will offer passengers an amazing holiday experience at sea, including a vibrant mix of bars and restaurants, places to shop, a luxurious spa and spectacular deck shows. The Ventura also boasts the largest theatre on a British ship.
