Largest Cruise Markets

The capacity of the North American cruise fleet is about 5.5 million passengers in 1994 with the Caribbean markets commanding a solid 65 percent of total market capacity.

The second largest single market is Western Mexico with about eight percent of the market capacity, followed by Alaska, seven percent; and the Mediterranean, five percent.

While the Mediterranean cruise fleet being marketed in North America will have a total estimated 1994 capacity of 287,000 passengers, the overall Mediterranean cruise fleet, including the ships being marketed in Europe, is estimated to be twice as large.

Other major markets are Bermuda, Panama Canal cruises, the Far East/South Pacific, Hawaii, Northern Europe and New England/Canada, in that order.

Interestingly enough, more capacity will be deployed in African waters this year than in South America.
