Rostock-Warnemunde Reports Strong 2015; Record Cruise Outlook for 2016

The Port of Rostock-Warnemunde has reported a strong 2015, with 7,883 calls by ferry and ro-ro vessels, tankers, freighters and cruise ships with 27.2 million tons of cargo, 2.2 million ferry passengers and 800,000 cruise passengers.

The 2016 cruise season starts in Warnemunde on April 28 with the arrival of the AIDAdiva. All told, 182 calls by 33 cruise ships are expected this year, more than in any other German destination, according to the port. The vessels will berth in Warnemunde 163 times and 19 times at the overseas port. Four vessels will be making maiden calls: the Koningsdam , Zuiderdam, Viking Sea and Monarch.

Rostock-based AIDA Cruises will again homeport two of its vessels: the AIDAdiva and the AIDAmar. Forty out of 49 port calls with embark and disembark passengers. Also, Costa, MSC, Norwegian and other cruise lines plan to change some of their passengers in Warnemunde,  most of whom will be German.

The 2016 cruise calendar shows five ships in port Aug. 27, five days with four ships and 10 days with three ships. More than 100 of the calls will take place on Fridays (28), Saturdays (49) and Sundays (27). In total, there will be cruise ships in port on some 117 days this year.

The port is also engaged in a number of projects to expand and enhance its facilities, including traffic improvements, in addition to protecting the nearby wetland environment. Capital expenditures are budgeted at 14 million euros.
