April Ship News

AIDA Cruises has taken delivery of its new 69,200-ton, 2,050-passenger Aida diva from Meyer Werft. The first in a series of four new ships, the Aida diva will be named in Hamburg on April 20. She will be sailing from Palma de Mallorca.

American Cruise Line has announced that its newest ship, the 100-passenger American Star, will enter service on June 2, sailing from Maine.

Cost a Crociere has named the first of its two “smaller” newbuildings Costa Luminosa. Scheduled to enter service in spring 2009, the Costa Luminosa will be 92,700 tons and accommodate 2,260-passengers.

“With the Costa Luminosa we will not only have Europe’s largest fleet, but it will consist of a varied range of liners in terms of size, features and style,” said Pier Luigi Foschi, Costa chairman and CEO, in a prepared statement. “This way we will be able to further diversify our offer and continue to propose new destinations every year. The Costa Luminosa and her sister ship will be the result of a new ship design concept.”

Being built at Fincantieris Marghera yard, a sister ship to the Costa Luminosa is slated to follow in 2010.

In related news, Foschi said at Carnival Corporation annual shareholder meeting that Costa will be seeking to develop new source markets for passengers in India and the Middle East.

Down Under, P&O Cruises is introducing a new paint scheme featuring P&O’s traditional all-white hull, when the Pacific Dawn starts service in November.

The line’s sun logo will be displayed on a white background on the ship’s funnel, as well as on the bow.

P&O Australia’s two other ships, the Pacific Sun and the Pacific Star will be repainted during scheduled drydocks in 2008.

In 2008, it is expected that P&O Australia will carry more than 150,000 passengers and visit more than 60 different destinations, according to the line
