Editorial: Being Relevant

Continuing to stay relevant to the industry, among the topics we cover in this issue are shipbuilding, with the yards going through difficult times, and new technologies. We see two powerplant options going forward: the diesel engine, which, lagging far behind automotive applications, can be developed much further; and the gas turbine, which is small, powerful and clean.

This in turn means two practical fuel options: HFO for the diesel engine with emissions purification systems where needed, and MGO, for the gas turbine. The added cost of emissions equipment for HFO reduces its cost advantage, and if diesel engines run on MGO, the gas turbine is equal on a fuel cost basis.

Despite the spin and its inherent benefits, LNG is still likely far off, lacking bunkering infrastructure, standardized rules and onboard tank capacity.

In our market coverage, Asia-Pacific represents huge opportunities, but is still a small part of the overall industry. In addition, Chinese sources suggest that supply is exceeding demand. So it will take time to build up a strong market. Long-term, Asia-Pacific holds tremendous promise, not just because of its potentially large markets, but also because of its diverse and interesting destinations.

Being relevant also means that we report on the findings from the Carnival Splendor and Costa Concordia incidents. Recent events have demonstrated how different corporate cultures respond, and to what extent they are proactive and transparent.

These are turbulent times, but challenges drive innovation. We are looking forward to seeing the industry put technology and proactive, enlightened management to work for its benefit.

We believe that innovation and transparency are keys to future success.

Bon Voyage
