Metro Garners PMA Safety Awards

At the recent Pacific Maritime Association’s 64th Annual Safety Awards Banquets, Metro Cruise and Metro Ports were honored with numerous Accident Prevention Awards for their achievements in workplace safety in 2012.

Metro Cruise received the 1st Place Group B Stevedore Coast Award and 1st Place Group B Stevedore Local Area Award for its Los Angeles/Long Beach operations, with Metro Ports achieving 2nd place in Local Area Award Group B Stevedore Operations.

On the Local Area level, Metro Cruise Los Angeles/Long Beach was also recognized as the Most Improved for those companies having 50,000 man hours or more and received a Reduced Injury/Illness Rate Certificate. Metro Cruise’s San Diego operations also received a Reduced Injury/Illness Rate Certificate as well as a Zero Injury/Illness Incident Rate Certificate.

Metro Ports in both Los Angeles/Long Beach and San Diego were recognized with Reduced Injury/Illness Rate certificates. Metro Ports San Francisco received 1st Place Injury Rate Reduction Bulk Operations, Seattle received 2nd Place Group C Stevedore, and Anacortes achieving Greatest Injury Rate Reduction.

On the Coast level, One-Year Zero Incident Rate Awards went to Metro Ports in Seattle, Metro Ports in Anacortes and to Metro Cruise in San Diego.

Metro Cruise President Stefano Borzone commented on the company’s overall accomplishments.

“We are pleased to share these accolades with our dedicated staff and labor force, which made these accomplishments possible,” Borzone said. “Metro’s Safety Department has successfully partnered with operations and support staff to create Metro’s new Safety Management System (SMS) for Team Metro. The safety team continues to focus on enhancing the company’s safety culture through awareness, information sharing, monitoring of regulatory changes, and the introduction of site-specific safety training programs.”
