Fireworks lit up the sky as the Port of Los Angeles capped off its once-in-a-lifetime centennial party with a light show along the waterfront on Sunday, Dec. 9. More than 5,000 people attended the milestone event, which featured appearances by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilwoman Janice Hahn — and the nation’s first-ever performance by Taiwan’s Evergreen Symphony Orchestra!

The Port of Los Angeles marked its Centennial on December 9, 2007, exactly 100 years after the Los Angeles City Council approved City Ordinance No. 19128, founding the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners and marking the official establishment of the Port.

Celebrating its Centennial in 2007, the Port of Los Angeles is America’s premier port. As the leading seaport in the nation in terms of shipping container volume and cargo value, the Port generates 919,000 regional jobs and $39.1 billion in annual wages and tax revenues. A proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles, the Port is self-supporting and does not receive taxpayer dollars.
