Cruise Lines International Association Commemorates World Oceans Day

In honor of World Oceans Day, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) highlighted the industry’s longstanding support of measures to protect the world’s oceans wherever its ships operate.

“The cruise line industry is fully committed to the responsible, sustainable stewardship of our oceans, coastal areas and beaches,” said CLIA President and CEO Christine Duffy. “The world’s oceans are critical to the long-term success and viability of our industry and our member lines employ a number of responsible practices and innovations to protect the oceans for future generations.”

World Oceans Day has been celebrated on June 8 since its proposal at the 1992 Earth Summit in Brazil. Since 2008, the United Nations has recognized the day dedicated to the honor, integrity, and importance of the world’s oceans.

In honor of World Oceans Day, the Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation (CICF), which is funded by CLIA’s member cruise lines, has made a $5,000 donation to the Cousteau Society, a non-profit organization founded in 1973 by Jacques Cousteau. The Cousteau Society raises funds for ocean exploration, research, and conservation.
