MSC Cruises Signs Venice Emissions Agreement

An agreement has been signed by the major institutions of the Venice Council, the Port Authorities and MSC Cruises that is designed to protect the integrity of the artistic and architectural heritage of Venice.

This voluntary agreement, known as VENICE BLUE FLAG, has the support of a number of additional shipping companies. It was the firm intention of all concerned to reduce emissions for the ships and ferries that transit from the Lido Port to the Maritime Station.

Prior to the May signing of this agreement, MSC Cruises had adopted cautionary measures to reduce the sulphurous anhydride and nitrogen oxide emissions, utilizing diesel fuel with a sulphur content not to exceed 2.5 percent. The captains were advised to use diesel fuel with a low sulphur content and low temperature for ignition during the transit and stop-off in the Venice Lagoon.

A total partnership has been created between MSC Cruises and the institutions of Venice. This has been carried through to the spectacular and cultural events forming part of the company’s ambition to safeguard Venice and its citizens.

“The Venice Blue Flag agreement is underwritten by MSC Cruises and consolidates the relationships that were initiated with the launch at the Friends of Venice Club. MSC Cruises also sponsored the 2007 Carnival and will be sponsoring the historic Regatta this coming September,” says Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises CEO.
