Oriana and QM2 at Blohm + Voss

Both the Oriana and the QM2 are at Blohm + Repair in Hamburg.  The Oriana arrived on Nov. 16 and the QM2 on Nov. 26.

The Oriana will spend four weeks in drydock for overhaul and renovation work, including the installation of a so-called duck tail to improve the stabilization of the hull at sea. New, additional cabins will be installed and addition to refurbishment of public rooms. The pool area will be modernized and upgraded with a new pool bar and lounge area.

The maintenance work also includes the removal and overhaul of the propulsion shafts at the stern. The engines, machinery and piping will be overhauled or renewed, as well as the electrical and monitoring systems. The tanks will be emptied, cleaned and inspected. Minor steel work will also be performed, according to the yard.

It is the fifth time the QM2 is at Blohm + Voss. The overhaul and renovation job to be completed on time before the eighth anniversary of the ship in 2012, includes the laying of new carpets and the replacement of curtains and bedcovers. Comprehensive maintenance work and inspections as well as inspections by the classification society will be performed. The Queen is scheduled to leave the yard on December 5 at about 12.00.

The overhaul comprises work in all cabins, the Queens and Princess Grill Restaurant, the Golden Lion Pub, the Commodore Club, the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar, the Sir Samuel’s, the Canyon Ranch SpaClub, the kids club „The Zone“ and the toddlers play area, and the Play Zone.

During the 10-day overhaul, new carpets will be laid in an area as large as 10 soccer fields and about 29 km of fabric consisting of more than 6,000 individual items will be arranged by more than 1,000 workers from Blohm + Voss Repair and its subcontractors. Fifty went oboard the ship already in Southampton on Nov. 24, 2011 to prepare for the yard work.
