Newfoundland and Labrador 2010 Season

This is expected to be another record breaking cruise season for the province, according to the Cruise Newfoundland and Labrador monthly newsletter. Twenty-seven ships representing 20 cruise operators are expected to visit destination ports bringing in “millions of dollars” in economic benefit. The ships range in size from the 12-passenger Wanderbird from Wanderbird Expedition Cruises to the 3,100-passenger Crown Princess. Approximately 80,000 passengers and crew in total are expected to visit Newfoundland and Labrador on cruise ships in 2010.

In related news, the City of St. John’s held its 19th Annual Tourism Awards on June 10 and Scott Andrews of Parks Canada was awarded the Signal Award by Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. The Signal Award is presented to the individual, group or company who has made a significant contribution to the evolution and sustainability of the cruise ship industry in St. John’s. According to the newsletter, throughout his tenure with Parks Canada Andrews has been a strong supporter of cruise calls. He was characterized as a true ambassador for the City of St. John’s and credited with developing the cruise ship greetings and musket farewell salute. Scott has served on the Cruise NL board of directors, marketing committee and re-branding committee as well as on the St. John’s Cruise Committee.

Also in June, Norwegian Cruise Line executives Joanne Salzedo, director of product development and Lily Urrutia, manager of product development & shore excursions visited Corner Book and explored Gros Morne National Park with representatives from the Corner Brook Port Corporation and Atlantic Cruise Ship Services. The Norwegian Spirit and the Jewel are making four calls at Corner Book this summer.
