Port of Galveston to Be Homeport of RCIs Mariner of the Seas

Port of Galveston is pleased to report that Royal Caribbean International has decided to reposition the Mariner of the Seas to Galveston in November 2011. The Mariner of the Seas will replace the Voyager of the Seas in the seasonal seven day rotation, offering Texas vacationers two roundtrip seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries through April 2012.

Mariner of the Seas, built four years after Voyager of the Seas is one of the world’s ten largest and most innovative cruise ships at sea. On average 3,300 cruise passengers pass through the Port of Galveston on their RCI cruise vacations.

“The repositioning of Mariner of the Seas to the Port of Galveston represents Royal Caribbean’s confidence in the Port of Galveston’s efficient cruise operations and ability to attract passengers on its Voyager class ships,” said Steven M. Cernak, Port of Galveston Port Director .

The Port of Galveston is Texas’ gateway for cruise sailings and international trade. Located at the entrance to Galveston Bay, the Port leases and maintains facilities situated on the north side of Galveston Island and on adjacent Pelican Island. The Galveston Island operations are a diversified mix of traditional and non- traditional cargo operations including roll on-roll-off cargo, dry bulk, export grain, refrigerated fruit, general cargo, and project cargo. In addition, the Port handling over 600,000 cruise passengers annually. The Port’s Pelican Island facilities comprise a combination of undeveloped property, an active ship and rig repair facility, and liquid bulk operations. The Port is served by both major western railroad operators and contributes significant economic impact and job creation to the region.
