Disney Cruise Line Releases Community Report

As part of The Walt Disney Company’s first consolidated corporate responsibility report, Disney Cruise Line today released its 2008 Community Report, highlighting the many ways Disney Cruise Line is actively involved in the ports it frequents.

The report shares details on the line’s commitment in the areas of community outreach, environmental stewardship and further outlines how the company provides a safe and comfortable workplace for Cast and Crew Members.

“At Disney Cruise Line, we strive to be a valued neighbor and positive member of our port communities,” said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations. “We enjoy working in partnership with local leaders as well as our Cast and Crew to extend our special brand of Disney magic beyond our ships and into the local communities where our Cast and Crew Members live, work and play.”

In 2008, Disney Cruise Line and its Cast and Crew Members contributed more than $140,000 in support to local organizations focused on developing children and supporting the environment across 14 unique ports of call. In addition, Disney VoluntEARS on ship and shore donated more than 4,200 hours to benefit non-profit organizations in Central Florida, The Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexican Riviera.

Highlights from the report include:

Our Community

A tradition of community service has been an integral part of the Disney heritage since the earliest days of the company. In 2008, Disney Cruise Line engaged communities by providing support to local non-profits through charitable giving and volunteer efforts, while also benefiting local economies by creating jobs and consuming goods and services.

o Shipboard Crew Members brought the magic of Disney characters to nearly 3,000 children in schools, hospitals and care facilities in Disney Cruise Line ports of call. Crew Members also spent time reading to children as part of a focused program supporting ongoing literacy education.

o Crew Members from both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder took part in special events engaging youth from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Clubs in both Florida and California benefited from activities aimed at fostering positive interactions with adults.

o In May, Disney VoluntEARS took part in separate 5K walks across Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay to raise more than $5,400 for conservation programs supported by the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.

The Environment

Disney Cruise Line is committed to supporting efforts to promote environmental sustainability while encouraging and inspiring environmentally responsible behavior on the part of our Cast and Crew Members, guests and business partners.

o In a first for the cruise industry, both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder utilize a unique hull coating that is both energy efficient and non-toxic. The durable coating improves hydrodynamic characteristics of the hull and increases fuel efficiency.

o An ongoing program on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay converts used trans fat-free cooking oil from shipboard galleys into biodiesel fuel to power small vehicles on the island. The program has successfully reduced diesel consumption and carbon emissions, saving up to 8,000 gallons of fuel.

o Researchers on Castaway Cay are involved in a multi-year project transplanting native sea urchins to control algae levels that can harm threatened corals. The project seeks to help restore fragile coral reefs in The Bahamas to ensure their continued health for the future.

o Disney Cruise Line was recognized by Condé Nast Traveler magazine in the “2008 World Savers Awards,” which honor travel companies around the world in areas of leadership and social responsibility. The line was named a finalist in four out of five categories, recognized for its ongoing commitment to community outreach and environmental conservation.

Our Workplace

Disney Cruise Line is committed to providing workplaces that foster safety, inclusion and respect both on land and at sea. The company offers training and development opportunities for Cast and Crew Members’ success and growth, while also providing resources to encourage a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and at home.

o Focused on ensuring the safety of both Guests and Crew, shipboard Crew Members receive more than 500,000 hours of safety training each year.

o As part of a company initiative supporting Cast and Crew Member health and wellness, shoreside Cast Members benefit from free online access to health management resources from WebMD.com. Wellness teams on land and sea also help to promote a healthy lifestyle, encouraging a balance of diet and exercise for every Cast and Crew Member.

The community report represents the latest phase in Disney’s longstanding heritage of corporate social responsibility and reflects a company-wide effort to build an integrated, transparent strategy that focuses on serving the needs of primary stakeholders, including guests, Cast and Crew Members, shareholders, business partners and local communities.
