Chilean Navy Rescues Passengers and Crew from Damaged Antarctic Ship

A Chilean Navy vessel rescued 89 passengers and 33 crew Friday off Antarpply Expeditions’ Ushuaia, which ran aground Thursday in Wilhelmina Bay along the Antarctic peninsula, various newspapers have reported.

The 3,000-ton ice-strengthened polar vessel was taking on water and spilling fuel, the navy reported. Containment efforts were underway to keep the fuel spill from spreading, according to published reports.

No injuries were reported. Antarpply Expeditions did not immediately answer phone calls asking for comment.
