A British Columbia political candidate has reportedly urged for tougher environmental laws, saying cruise ships in Vancouver are spreading pollutants.
The Canadian Press reported Monday that New Democrat Michael Byers has suggested all cruise ships plug into Metro Port Vancouver’s shorside power instead of using diesel engines while in port.
The port plans to have two berths with shoreside power facilities open by 2009.
Byers, from Vancouver, also alleged cruise ships avoid violating U.S. sewage regulations by holding the waste until they can dump it in Canadian waters. He said recently tightened regulations do not go far enough, according to The Canadian Press.
