The Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP) in Mombasa received reports Tuesday that pirates had attacked – and possibly hijacked – a French-flagged small cruise ship or large yacht in the Gulf of Aden, officials told Cruise Industry News.

Media reports that the vessel was a private yacht with only crew aboard could not be immediately confirmed.

The SAP received several telephone reports of the attack saying the ship was a French passenger vessel, but the exact location of the attack was not immediately available, and no pirate groups had come forward with demands, said Andrew Mwangura, SAP’s program coordinator.

CMA CGM, Ponant Cruises, which had its ship Le Ponant hijacked in the region earlier this year, told Cruise Industry News that the recent attack was not on any of its ships.

The London-based International Chamber Of Commerce’s anti-piracy Commercial Crimes Services were seeking more information about the alleged attack Wednesday, including trying to confirm the validity of the reports, said Cyrus Mody, an International Chamber Of Commerce manager.
