Fleet expansion is on the minds of Japanese cruise lines, Cruise Industry News has learned.

“Now may be a good time to kick off a feasibility study for a newbuilding,” said Jun Uoyama, Mitsui’s director (in charge of tonnage planning). Both Costa Cruises and Royal Caribbean generated ample interest among Japanese cruisers, even though their main source markets were Chinese, he said. “And we believe the Japanese are also a potential target (for Costa and Royal Caribbean),” Uoyama added.

NYK Cruises’ Director Shigenori Niimura said that while nothing is “fixed” as far as the company’s plans for new tonnage, he is currently “studying what ship would be suitable for the next generation’s market.”
