China Port Feature: Taizhou

Over the summer another port popped up on the map in Taizhou, located in the Zhejiang Province.

The port is some 300 kilometers south of Shanghai, and within a three-to-four hour drive of Zhoushan. Interestingly, the port was granted approval in 2009 for sailings to Taiwan, and has a berth for smaller ships, up to 50,000 tons.  Taiwan sailings are run by China’s state-owned COSCO and its affiliated companies flying the Hong Kong flag.

The port uses a 4,200-square-meter temporary terminal, and has plans to build a larger terminal building.

“This is a pilot project for us and we are considering exploring future expansion,” said Min Xu, a spokesperson for the port.
