New Ships Across the Industry

Carnival Cruise Lines has ordered two more sister ships to the 70,000-ton Fantasy to be built at Wartsila for delivery in 1990 and 1991.

Royal Cruise Line has confirmed plans to build a sister ship to the new Crown Odyssey, under construction at the Jos. Meyer shipyard in West Germany.

The Crown Odyssey will enter service in 1988; delivery of the second ship is expected in 1989.

The new ship will replace the Royal Odyssey which has been sold to regency Cruises for delivery at the end of 1988. The 25,500 ton ship was built in 1964 and accommodates 806 passengers.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has made known plans for an additional ship every two years over the next ten-year period.

Princess Cruises has announced intentions to expand by construction or acquisition.

Exploration Cruise Lines has plans that could lead to the construction of three more ships over the next five years.

Howard Fine, President of Costa Cruises, confirms that the line is entertaining expansion plans that may involve several ships, but that no decision has yet been made on newbuilding or acquisition of existing tonnage. Overseas press reports indicate that Costa is negotiating with Italian yards for a new 50,000 ton ship, for delivery in 1990.

Sources also report that Sea Venture Cruises already has its sights set on a four to five ship fleet…
