Chandris to West Coast?

Was that really a casually dressed Al Wallack seen sunning himself on the Southward on one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s short cruises from Los Angeles to Ensenada recently? What would the Senior Vice President of Chandris Fantasy Cruises possibly be doing in those far-flung waters? After all, Chandris has traditionally operated its vessels in the Caribbean, Bermuda, South American and the Mediterranean markets. Could the marketing and sales executive have gone to test the waters, as it were, to check into the possibility of positioning a Chandris ship in that market two years hence? The cruise line’s new 45,000-ton, 1,400-pax. ship is slated for delivery in early 1990 and there is talk that the Amerikanis will be repositioned from Bermuda to the weekly New York to Montreal run in summer 1990. Chandris officials have said they are seriously studying the possibility of doing just that once the new Chandris vessel begins seven-day roundtrip sailings from New York to Bermuda in two years. There was even an off-hand remark that Wallack stopped by the Port of San Diego to look around during his West Coast sojourn… “just to say ‘hello.'” Could San Diego be in the Chandris future with something like two- and five-day cruises to the Mexican Riviera?
