Costa Cruises Strategy Change

Costa Cruise Lines is bringing Costa Classica back to Europe this summer instead of sailing year-round Canbbean cruises as originally announced. The Costa Classica is scheduled to begin Saturday sailings from Ft. Lauderdale on January 25, 1992.

Reports from sources in Miami said that Costa is bringing the Classica back to Europe due to soft demand in the American market. The weakness of the dollar and the higher per diems attainable in the European market are also said to have contributed to this decision.

Meanwhile, the Daphne has embarked on a world-cruise replacing the Danae which recently suffered heavy fire damage. As the Carla Costa has been sold this leaves Costa with just one ship in North America in the summer of 1992 and maybe none in the Caribbean. The company is presently contemplating whether to put the Costa Riveria in Alaska or keep her year-round out of San Juan where she has replaced the Carla Costa.
