Princess Adds Black Boxes to Ships

Princess Cruises has installed a maritime “black box” recorder on board each vessel in its nine ship fleet.

The Voyage Event Recorder (VER) provides a continuously updated record of the previous 24 hours of voyage which can be analyzed in the event of an incident at sea. The system records audio (using microphones strategically positioned in the navigation bridge and in the engine room), radar, gyro, ship’s position and speed, as well as date and time.

The VER was created by BroadGate, a UK based subsidiary of Princess’ parent company P&O. Introduced four years ago, the system has so far been installed on more than 60 ships worldwide.
